Home Redecorating on a Budget

Redecorating your home can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be! Here I will give you a few simple ideas that are fairly cheap in remodeling your home to be a little more updated with the times and fads, as well as have a cozy feel and look.

Whether your buying or selling your home, you always want it to appeal to yourself as well as those that will visit you. Creating that, should not be hard. Home décor is a big part of what makes a house a home.

Hit the $1 Stores!

If you have a Dollar Store (everything in the store costs $1.), look for wallpaper borders. Most carry racks of them and you can find some fascinating patterns.

Rearrange the Furniture

This is one of the easiest things you can do with what you already have. Simply moving your décor or furniture you currently have to flow better within your home can make a simple but bold statement.

Adding to Your Flooring

Linoleum is surprisingly easier to lay. You need some linoleum glue and an edging knife. Most department stores now carry 6 x 9 foot rolls of linoleum and you can turn a section in front of a door into an entry way. Measure the area, pencil it on the back of the linoleum, cut and glue to the floor where you want it installed.

Painting Your Walls – Faux Finishing.

This is a great way to update your home, or create soothing effects, or add to a unused wall and turn it into a accent wall. Faux finishing is also a wonderful, fun way to dress up your walls in so many different ways. (stippling, sponging, frottage, colorwashing, the list goes on. Did you know you can emulate the look of Levi Jeans? Create a suede look and feel? Sandwash? Ask my wife, if you would like more tips in this area.

Picture Frames

Buy inexpensive picture frames and put in your favorite snapshots. Most Dollar Stores carry nice frames for very little price. Lots of wall hangings attract attention.

Fresh Flowers

If you have a flower garden, fill vases with fresh cut flowers. Not only will your room smell good, but it is attractive to the eye as well.

Throw Rugs or Accent Rugs

Throw rugs can improve a rooms appearance as well. Go with contrasting colors for effect. Most department stores sell small rugs for a few dollars.

Garage Sales & Yard Sales

Hit garage sales for inexpensive tables and chairs. It does not cost much to refinish a shelf, table or chair and no one will know it is not new. You can also repaint, faux, or spray paint older items to newer colors that match your current décor.

Houseplants & Artificial Flowers

Houseplants not only improve the air quality of your house. They add to the decoration. Fake plants as well work just as good. In fact you can make more arrangements with them to add to the look of your home.

Shampoo Your Carpet

Rent a carpet shampooer every 6 months. Not only does it increase the life of your carpet, but one cleaning can really brighten the rug to the original color.

Throw Pillows

One last item you can use in your decorating is throw pillows. Throw pillows can be used in the bedroom, living room, or family room to add a touch of color and style. Use an assortment of colors, shapes and sizes for the most stunning effect. If you sew, you can even make pillows in the same or similar fabric as your furnishings. Purchase several large, over-stuffed pillows to prop against one another on the floor, this works well in any room that you have an empty space or corner that needs to be filled.

Center Pieces

Centerpieces make a great addition to any coffee table or kitchen table. They can also be made very inexpensively, but with taste and class. My favorite centerpiece cost me under $10 to make. I bought a wide shallow octagon fish bowl and filled the bottom of it with marbles. I added water, dyed with blue food coloring to make the water a deep blue, and added white floating candles. This looks elegant and expensive when the candles are lit. To set the look off, I bought two little guppy bowls for each end table and added marbles and the same deep blue water to each. Only one floating candle sits in each. Every time that I light them I have a peaceful and relaxing environment, and people always ask me where I bought the kits to make them, or if I can make them for them.

Updating Your Drawer & Cabinet Handles

So easy, so simple, and can really update the look.

Wall Décor & Art

It seems everyone these days are filling their walls with more and more art and metal wall décor. The limits are endless with the imagination of metal wall art out there. Sconces are another valuable décor creeping up everywhere. This can add to the effect of any wall with the simple lighting of the candle flickering to set off a soft feel to your area your purposely wanting to make noticeable.
